for everyone

I spent 6 days in Bali, from 7-13 December 2006. Got there pretty early on Friday morning, and I went to sightsee with my cuz for a bit at Kuta Sq and Hard Rock beach. The wedding ceremony was due the next day. Started at 4 o'clock and lasted for about 2 hours. Then the families gave their blessing to Adrian and Myrna, before we had our dinner. After dinner, there was more entertainment, especially for the young uns as the host already prepared an after party. It was so much fun, watching and getting to know the 'friends of a friend' and so on. The brunch was simply beautiful, with everyone dresses up in white, matched with an orange sarong. After the brunch, some of the guests went home, but the family (me and my realitves, mostly) stayed behind and moved to another hotel. There, we went on a tour (or shopping spree) from Ubud, Tanah Lot, Tanjung Benoa, and Kuta Square. At night, some of us went clubbing a few times. It was fun, and somewhat feels like you're abroad but they say since the Bali bomb incident, things weren't the same. It never gets too crowded, that's for sure. Well, I hope there's more people for this Christmas Hol! The people in Bali needs you, so come on! Party once again in this beautiful Isle of Gods...! :O~

The Famous Jazz festival that is JakJazz returns in Senayan last 24, 25 and 26 November 2006. I was there among the crowd for the performance on the 25th, listening to the music at the event dubbed Jazz in the Park.

The first band that steals my attention was a Korean group called
Seo Young Do Trio. Their music is heavy on the guitar and bass. Even with the absence of a vocalist, the drum and strings were able to produce a memorable performance. Plenty of solo drum action for fans, and they even played an improvised version of Kicir-Kicir, a traditional Betawi song.

Just a few moments after, I found myself listening to a bunch of talented young percussionist who were under the Adjierao Unlimited Percussion group. Coming all the way from Bandung, the group was greeted with a very enthusiastic audience, which one would suspect is either member of the family, or relatives. It didn't matter, as the kids brought out an outstanding performance. True to the cheerful childhood spirit yet polished and perfected to give a satisfactory musical experience.

Smoma also appeared that evening, as a warm up to their main performance the following night. They played favourite numbers, which raise the temperature within the audience. Straight after Smoma, Maliq and his D'Essentials appears on the mainstage. Their excited fans greeted with much anticipation. The band played popular tunes and also introduces new songs from their 'work in progress' second album. The gig was accompanied by a guest appearance. This 'guest' came rappin in the middle of a song and then rhimed another one, after a rather painful intro thingy taken straight out of a low budget Space Invader rip off. He claimed to be Dana, name stage 'Karis' who also contributes in the second album. He can be easily recognised from the urban rapper outfit, not so easily recognised by the blurry quality of the photograph. Which is a shame, really cuz he rapped rather eloquently. We'll sure be waiting to hear more from the dude!

Yap, these are some of the pictures of me taken while I stayed at YD's place at Johor Bahru (JB) and the next stop, Singapore. You can see me, YD, and Rudy having dinner there at a waterfront cafe in JB. I'm enjoying a spot of otak-otak. They are RED there in JB, not white like they are back home. For dinner, we had the usual Nasi Lemak.

Near the end, there are some pictures of the Esplanade and the Fullerton Hotel. The Esplanade is famously called Gedung Durian because of it's distinctive rooftop architecture. It's supposed to ressemble a split durian with the spiky side up. It's a theatre building, not unlike the Sage Gateshead.

We had this farewell party due to me and Rudy going back home. We never actually prepared for the party, so it was a last minute thing. I rearranged the furnitures in the morning, went shopping and then helped R cook. We had noodles, fried chicken and rice. Was great, wasn't it guys? I hope everybody had a great time, and thanks for all your support for the last 5 years!!!

Blog EntrySynaptics Touch Pad mod for laptop usersJun 21, '06 9:08 PM
for everyone
This is a modification to Synaptics touch pad software to be used in laptops with touch pads. If for some reason you can't scroll anymore with your touch pad when you slide on the side (especially for software such as Opera or OpenOffice), then read on!! If you use IBM Thinkpad, just follow the links at the bottom for your work-around :D

  • Find SynTPEnh.ini under C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP (sometimes ...\Media too). Don't close the window yet, tho cuz you'll need it again soon.

  • Edit the file using Notepad and add the following lines, anywhere in the code:

  • [Opera7]
    FC = "OperaWindowClass"
    SF = 0x10000000
    SF |= 0x00004000

    [OpenOffice]
    WT = "*OpenOffice*"
    SF = 0x10000000
    SF |= 0x00004000

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, look under 'Processes' and terminate SynTPEnh.exe.

  • Now go back to the SynTP folder and double-click SynTPEnh.exe to restart it.

  • You may have to close the Opera or OpenOffice window and restart it too.

For more details (actually not that much more) and the IBM Thinkpad solution, click here for Opera and here for OpenOffice solutions.

Does anyone know how to turn off that annoying click Microsoft Internet Exporer makes when a link is pressed? It's enough to make a frog go crazy... geddit? HAHAHAHA, CRAZY FROG!!!

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio devices

Click the 'sounds' tab. In the window, scroll down to 'Windows Explorer' and in the sub menu, highlight 'Start navigation'

Pull down the drop down box below, where it currently says 'Start' or 'Windows Start' and choose '(none)' instead. Click 'Apply', then click OK, and close the Control Panel.

No more clicking.

This song rocks! Listen to it, and be blown away.

Attention please. For all you design people out there, you should check this out for a minute. Haiyan Zhan from Interaction Design Institute in Ivrea, Italy has named his thesis 'Control Freak'. The project is 'devices that attach to everyday objects, turning them into interactive game play objects.' In reality, the controller kinda take the Nintendo Wii controller, and taking it one step further. It is essentially several motion sensors attached to a clamp or a peg, which you can attach to stuff, like your office chair, your jeans, or your house pet. Amusing iBook bashing video included!

Wow, this guy's got some MAD skillz!!! (read aloud in Tim Westwood style) But really, this guy is something. Dano2k0 from the xbox-scene forum has ripped apart his XBOX 360 and stuck in a watercooling system complete with a mini reservoir and a pump! He also took his time to repaint his XBOX with some nice 'shifting' blue paint and finally illuminates the whole work with blue LEDs. Supreme work Dano2k0! Well done mate!

Blog EntryHow to blog in MultiplyJun 20, '06 7:29 PM
for everyone
I was pretty unhappy at how my multiply site looked like. I originally had it in 'boxed' view, and each entry in my blog is segregated with a huge, ugly, thick separator which I thought I couldn't do naught about. I've played with different themes, fiddled with the layout, and got it even worse than before. It was pretty frustrating as I wanted everything to appear at the top of the page. The theme doesn't help either since it practically occupy half the page with fancy (although rather nice) graphic.

I was pleasantly delighted upon discovering the '(linear) blog' layout. It pretty much what I had in mind. You should check if you can improve your page by switching to linear blog layout. I don't know why multiply prefer the boxed layout as their default. I'm guessing because they wanted the site to feel differently from similar site such as blogger and the like. Again, it's a don't-fix-it-if-it-ain't-broke case, don'cha think? If you're thinking about switching, look up and click on the 'Explore' button. On the Explore page, click on My Settings>Home Page Layout. Change your layout type to 'Linear (Blog)' and click OK. Instead of contained in separate blocks like the previous layout, now every entry you made appears in chronological order, the latest being on top of the page. I find that this layout gives more continuity feel and makes filling the descriptions you write for picture albums, links and other stuff to also act as a blog entry. I can see the point for the boxed layout, for example if you have..., maybe if you prefer to look like..., in the website you might wanna..., oh forget it! Folks, just switch to blog layout. It's much better!

Now I want to talk about the skin I'm in. Not the slightly furry yellow one, but the Black Lily by Sam Royama. I chose this skin over the rest for several things. First, I like the fact that it stretches wide. All those skins who have right and left margin of 2 inches are not getting my love. From the available templates provided by Multiply, only two or three stretches wide to fill the whole page. This one in particular provided nice red/black contrast, but still readable. The entries are segregated nicely, not too far, not too narrow and all of them looks coherent. Some skin change the design for photos, or review. I don't find that attractive. My only complaint is perhaps the comment boxes. When a guest left a comment at the end of my blog entry, the'll come up as a ghastly white stripe. It gets worse when you got a whole discussion going on! Try scrolling up and down without risking yourself a seizure of somekind! It's near impossible ;P

Anyhoo, I'm leaving it at that because I got some important news I got to tell ya! watch out for my next story.

As I was considering an appropriate title for the Photo section of this site, I came across the word 'camera obscura'. You might know that it is an optical device which lead to the eventual invention of modern cameras. What you might not know is that the word is Latin for 'dark chamber'.

I figured that obscura can only means dark, which leaves the other word, 'camera' to mean none other than chamber. I originally thought that 'camera' might mean something to do with light, or image. However I now concluded that 'chamber' or 'room' maybe a more suitable translation. This explain the root of Indonesian word 'kamar' which means exactly that. Fascinating, no?

A rocket has landed in the land of the Sultan! A little girl came out from the space ship and she take herself to see what the Kingdom of the Sultan has to offer.

The Sultan decided to greet the little girl and show her around. He ordered his servants to prepare the Elephant. Oh what a splendid Elephant he was! The servants dressed the Elephant with the most beautiful jewelries and ornaments. He had to carry a tent for the Sultan, but he does not mind.

The Sultan also gathered the most talented musicians, dancers and artists to get on board the Elephant to see the Little girl. They finally found the Little girl as she was resting by. They played and became great friends. She spent four days in the land of the Sultan, and she had a really really good time. She met with some of the native dwellers of the land.

Over time, words spread amongst the local dwellers. Soon after people from near and far comes by to say hello to the little girl. The little girl felt happy and made a lot of new friends. However, she cannot stay forever in the Kingdom of the Sultan.

Several days has passed and its time for the little girl to come back to where she belongs. She found the Sultan and his Elephant and they agreed to see the Little girl back to her space ship. When the space ship blast away to carry the Little girl back, everybody said good bye and good luck to the Little girl. Until we meet again Little girl!

Blog EntryGetting Wild in the World of Animal Crossing!Mar 17, '06 8:14 PM
for everyone
I installed a new firmware on my router today. I was having some problem with the old router firmware because my DS could not recognise the wifi connection. This is a problem because I have recently made a major purchase of 2 DS games. The first was Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble, which does not affect the Wifi connectivity; mainly because it does not offer Wifi multiplayer gameplay. The second game is Animal Crossing: Wild World! At the time this blog was written, AC:WW has not been released in the UK. I bought it from eBay from a rocker who imported the game from the US. The guy thought that the game is too much like his old Gamecube version of the Animal Crossing game. I couldn't care less how similar it is to the GC version because I have not a GC and thus never even seen Animal Crossing on the GC! Anyway, I am grateful that I am lucky enough to be one of the first to grace the Wild World of Animal Crossing in Europe. Well, that's of course can only happen if I can connect to the Nintendo Wifi Connection (WFC)! Which I can't, at the moment at least... :(

Now here's the problem; according to this forum, the DS requires TX rate between 1-2 mbps from the router. However, the official UK firmware of my D-link DSL G604T router does not provide a setting for the TX rate. As mentioned by Bubbz and Marty_McSly (to whom I'm eternally grateful), an Australian version of the G604T firmware (v2.00B02) solves the problem and connects the DS to Nintendo WFC. After reading through the whole topic, it seems that a helluvalot of people has confirmed that the method works. I could not be more excited to try out the solution for myself.

I followed Marty's instruction step by step, and everything was going well. I changed my PC IP address to 10.1.1.5, subnet mask 255.0.0.0 and the default gateway to 10.1.1.1. I ran the firmware update software, and received a message to change the IP address to the same subnet to 10.48.88.66. I changed mine to 10.48.88.69 as suggested by Marty. In his guide, it worked first time. I wasn't so lucky. I tried to upgrade the firmware several times, but every time the installation would stall at a particular point. The software said that there was FTP timeout and I needed to change my IP address to the same subnet as their device. Eventually I changed my IP address to 10.48.88.88 and et voila! It worked! The installation process was successful and the router has now has the Australian v2.00B02 firmware.

However, I was still half way there. I now effectively have a brand new router and I will need to configure the router to work with Jovian's broadband subscription. One thing struck me dead. I forgot to note down the username and password of the broadband subscription! Oh no, and I thought I was doing so well! After beating around the bush several times, finally I remembered to look in the BT broadband installation box. Jovian's got it hidden under his bed and when I openned the box, the manual told the username that will be used for the subscription. Jovian knows the password, so after configuring the username and the password, I saved all settings and restart the modem/router. Guess what? It worked! Jovian can now surf the internet again and play RO Online. As far as he's concerned, nothing seemed to have happened so he feels... indifferent. I'm happy because now I know how to install an Australian firmware to a UK product (-_-!) and connect my DS to WFC!!! (<-- the most important thing!)

One thing I have yet to discover is all the configuration of the bittorrent download. The thing was always a bit of a pain since I couldn't got through my firewall and establish a 'green' connection with other peers. I had done it finally, Since I haven't got anything to download using the bittorrent, I think I will lay it off to one side for the time being.

Oh yeah! Of course everybody is invited to add me as to their Animal Crossing friend list. My Animal Crossing: Wild World friend code is 0687-8675-XXXX (Contact me if you're interested!). I hope to see a lot of invitations soon! ;D

Another good application of modern technology. BBC had an article on tonight's news about a flat in london where the residents communicate between each other through a virtual forum. The residents set up and maintain a site/message forum, where they chat, complain, and joke around. It's a good way to get to know your neighbours if you are too shy to meet in person. Isn't it time to get to know your next door neighbours?
